Wild Orchids (and other flowers) in Crete (Greece)

Wild tulips near Spili (Tulipa doerfleri)

You will find some typical and endemic orchids and some more flowers, most of them seen in the mid-uplands above Spili. April is the main time for seeing most of the wild orchids of Crete. The three genera you would probably see are Orchis, Ophrys and Serapias.

The area above Spili is very attractive for botanists coming from different countries. Not everyone is taking care of the flowers – human trampling is an issue as well as many sheep and goat herds of the locals not taking care of these jewels.
